If you'd like to delve into the band's early work, you'll be well served by the 1971 compilation album Relics. Notable vinyl record covers by Pink Floyd
There are some special features worth telling about selected Pink Floyd albums. The band is known not only for their decades of musical output. But also for their innovative concept shows, which were impressively conceived throughout the band's history. Likewise, some record covers were decidedly unusual.
Thus, designer friends Aubry Powell and Storm Thorgerson came up with the idea of creating a kind of "non-cover" for the album Atom Heart Mother. That is, something that has no relation to the band or their lyrics at all. They drove off and spontaneously photographed a cow in the field. Roger Waters, who was the main songwriter until he left the band in 1985, thought the picture was fantastic. And so it became - without even printing the band name or the album name on it - the cover image for the album. Understandably, the record company was not very enthusiastic about it. But from a marketing point of view, the plan worked brilliantly: weeks before the release, everyone wondered why those cow posters were everywhere.
And for Wish You Were Here, a man was actually set on fire - something that would be unthinkable nowadays. Everyone would later digitally remount the flames on the clothes. The world-famous triangular prima of Dark Side of the Moon was also discovered by the cover designers by accident: a ray of light fell through a paperweight and a rainbow of light appeared on the other side. This created the perfect cover, symbolising both the album title and Pink Floyd's penchant for mysterious, light-and-sound-dominated live performances.
